In the last article I hit on the very real trend of failed diet attempts yet buffered that idea with the statistic that most people do indeed achieve their weight loss goal or very close to it. Diets are often successful initially yet keeping the weight off long term appears to be the real challenge. Where diets often fall short is in not addressing what’s referred to as self sabotage.
Our self saboteur represents the programmed belief system that made us gain the weight and treat ourselves that poorly in the first place. If you have the same belief system in place after a diet is over, the same weight and health status will result long term. If we want to keep the weight off it means recognizing our self saboteur and making peace with it. (more on that later)
Our self saboteur represents a certain part of our personality and belief system, which wants to receive the same recognition as the other parts of our personality. Nature is full of polar opposites, like night and day or love and hate or hot and cold etc. Our personalities are no different. Some days we want to be healthy and yet other days we want to hit the wine show and eat at McDonalds on our way home at 1 in the morning.
The part of our personality that wants to stop our growth and progression into our full adult self, is the saboteur. In most cases our self saboteur appears to come from parts of our personality known as the child ego. It’s the self saboteur that most diet programs don’t address or recognize and this is the primary reason why many people are unable to keep the weight off after a successful diet attempt. (the diet programs I organize do address this)
So forget about the diet or the exercise routine and remember that if you want to stay thin (without the need to go to war with yourself via excess exercise routines or restrictive diets etc) you will need to be able to see the self saboteur at work in your life. The first step in living a healthy lifestyle is developing the ability to see yourself stopping yourself from progressing.
If you’re a person who thinks you’re too smart to let a hidden and separate part of your personality sabotage your best life, this isn’t going to work. Basically make sure to ask yourself this question, “If you’re so in control of your mind, why are your results so out of line in with what you really want for yourself in this life?” Yes, there’s something else going on inside your mind and that’s where all this starts.
The self saboteur is the part of us that eats junk food after joining a diet program or starts smoking again after we quit smoking or goes to an alcoholic’s house for dinner after we decided to quit drinking. Our self saboteur is the part of our personality that doesn’t use the treadmill after we just bought it or the part of us that doesn’t go to the fitness club after we paid for a membership or the part of us that misses our session with the personal trainer (again) etc. Our self saboteur pretends it’s too expensive to be healthy yet has no problem with the expenses of being sick. Our self saboteur pretends organic food is no better than non-organic food and often associates positive words like “break”,“treat” or “relaxing” with negative things like smoking cigarettes, drinking wine or taking the entire family out to eat junk food.
So basically when ever you try to become a better version of yourself, the self saboteur quickly arrives on the scene to shut the entire process down.
