Was Stress A Factor In This Tragic Story?

A father is supposed to drive his child to day care and then go to work. The father just simply goes to work and leaves the child in the car for the entire day. It appears the father actually forgot the child was in the back seat and also forgot that there was no day care drop off. The father then enters the car after work (without seeing the child in the back seat) and drives to the day care to pick up the child, who of course was never dropped off there in the first place. The child was in the back seat the entire time and had passed away. Beyond being extremely tragic, what could have caused this break down in brain function of the parent? How can we avoid similar situations in the future? Can we save other children before disaster strikes?

This was a massive lapse in brain function yet knowing how the brain works, we are seeing more and more “brain failures” like this as people become more stressed in our “go go go” society. Stress activates the R-complex of our nervous system, sometimes referred to as the fight or flight response or sympathetic nervous system. When the brain is activated like this…….it has extremely low IQ plus a pin point singular focus, which means that part of the brain is extremely good at focusing on one thing at a time but extremely inept at multi tasking. Regular stress triggers this part of the brain, as does a lack of sleep, junk food consumption, certain medications (especially anti depressants) and the most powerful activator of this “not so good part of the brain”….is coffee. Even worse is coffee on an empty stomach. The author of the most extensive book on caffeine ever written has encouraged police officers to even start testing people in car accidents, to see if they are under the influence of caffeine, which makes the brain extremely inept at accomplishing complex tasks, like driving a motor vehicle. Can tragedies like this be avoided if we simply get healthy, learn how to slow down and remove common toxins from our lifestyle? That’s a question our addicted society isn’t even interested in answering right now unfortunately. It may be time our society starts reassessing the speed and intensity it requires its’ citizens to operate at….and the stimulant addictions that are common place within our culture of chronic stress.
