As I was coaching a couple regarding self sabotage and the wife said, “I just want him to like and love me for me” and the husband said, “there’s nothing really left of the entity she refers to as “me”. The woman I once knew isn’t really there anymore. Everything from her breasts to her skin and from her eye lashes to her hair….isn’t even hers anymore. She’s become a hybrid of media, science and herself. Her personality is nothing but a montage of reality TV shows and sitcoms. I do love her, the old her and in 10 years, at the rate this is going, they’re will be nothing of her left to recognize. Why can’t she love herself “for herself” first and if she can’t love herself, why is it fair for her to demand someone else do that for her?”
After such a powerful statement, the room went silent, with all parties understanding the extreme social problems we were dealing with in our modern time. We stayed silent for 2 mins, tried to talk but couldn’t and then we all decided that we needed a time out to gather ourselves after such a powerful utterance of truth. At that point, we all recognized that these issues were beyond ourselves and that we were in extreme jeopardy as a species……not just as individuals.
