1. You have home exercise equipment that you use as a clothing rack.
2. You joined a gym, never went and quit the year after you joined.
3. After quitting the first gym, you joined another one….(hoping it was the gym)…..and you never went to that one either. (hint…..it’s you. It’s not the gym)
4. You purchase things you don’t need, when you’re already in debt and you also haven’t thought about how much income you’ll need when you retire.
5. You go back to the medical doctor and take more medical drugs, when you only got more sick by taking the first round of prescriptions. Have you noticed that your doctor only gets paid when you’re sick? Have you noticed that your doctor never reviewed your diet, stress levels or lifestyle? Self saboteurs are really bad at connecting the dots.
6. You’re always externalizing both the problems and the solutions. For example “I’m big boned”, “it’s in my genes” or “it runs in my family”….are examples of “externalizing the problems”. The truth is that overweight people have the same sized bones as smaller people and genes have been proven to control NOTHING. Bad habits run in families, not bad genes. If you eat garbage and get sick, it means your genes are working perfectly. “My doctor said”, “the surgery was scheduled ASAP” or “the test results are coming back tomorrow”…..are examples of “externalizing the solutions”. Self saboteurs blame everything but themselves for their problems and will pursue any solution that has nothing to do with them looking in the mirror and changing their self sabotaging ways.
7. You’re most likely a consumer of coffee (caffeine), wine (booze) and junk food……all proven sedatives. (plus medical drugs) These compounds are proven to alter brain activity, hyper activating short term thinking and self gratification based behaviors, while at the same time down regulating long term thinking plus rational and logical thought. These compounds and the way they change brain function, are major factors in the self sabotage cycle.
8. There’s TV and movie watching most nights, if not every night. TV and movie watching provides the self saboteur all the negative role modelling and distraction they need to guarantee they stay stuck in their stuckness.
9. You most likely tell people about how sick you are or the terrible things happening in your life within 5-10 minutes of meeting someone new. Your close friends get the play by play and the fine details of your dysfunctional life, even when it’s beyond obvious that they’ve tuned out years ago. Sometimes you tell people what disease you have before you tell people what your name is.
10. If you’ve made it this far, you’re most likely not a true saboteur…..because a real saboteur is a master “reality avoider” and stopped reading this list at point #3 or #4.
If you’re looking for help overcoming your self sabotage, let me know.
