I know a guy who almost lost everything because of cocaine. Because of the loss, he experienced plenty of pain. Pain is a guardian, not a goblin….because it gives us an opportunity to evolve. So he got off the cocaine and now he’s dedicated himself to doing steroids full time. We only evolve to the level of the tribe, in most cases. If we want more than the average version of life, we need to understand how the mind really works.
The psychological issue here is that this guy’s afraid to be the best version of himself because everyone around him is mediocre and caught in the work, sedate, work cycle. If he quit steroids, cocaine and everything else holding him back…..he would rise up above his station in life and make a tribe migration into something amazing. The human mind sees any changing of tribes as scary because when you change tribes, there’s a portion of time when you have to walk alone…TRIBELESS, which registers in the mind as life threatening. This fear is part of our ancient genetic hard wiring because being tribeless 10,000 years ago was in fact life threatening. Changing tribes isn’t life threatening today AT ALL. It’s a false fear yet it often paralyzes us from moving ahead in our lives.
Going from a self destructive, spiritually lost tribe……to a grounded, moral, richer and happier tribe isn’t anything that needs to be feared. When this guy quit cocaine and got on the steroids full time, what he was really saying to his old tribe was, “see everyone, I still fit it with our herd of dysfunction, I’m not going anywhere, I’m still lost and underachieving just like you are, so let’s all be afraid of our best life together because I need all you by my side to feel safe.” And this folks is the foundation of self sabotage, the fear of living your best life gets the better of you….because you don’t have the courage to walk tribeless for a couple miles to make your dreams come true.
