I remember a young man who was having a hard time with cocaine. The father was a chronic drinker but never did hard drugs. The father was really upset with his son and was very quick to tell others that “my son didn’t pick up the cocaine habit from me!” and the father was right but the father also needed to learn how the human mind really works.
The mind mimics what it sees, either directly or in regards to patterns. The son would see his Dad drinking daily, which registered as self abuse in the mind. According to the son’s young psyche, in order to acquire standing in his family tribe, self abuse was a good place to start the bonding process. So although the son didn’t learn “drinking” from the Dad, the son did learn self abuse and simply copied this common form of self abuse from his father, in the hopes of bonding with his family tribe. The son picking up cocaine as his modality of self abuse could have come about from a desire to overly impress the father, with a super intense form of self abuse, in order to gain extreme favor with his self abusive herd. The society in general also provided firm signals that self abuse was the safe place to gather one’s energy and tribal affiliation. Those inverted signals coming out of it’s primary source on this planet…..Hollywood. The society was self abusing and so was the family tribe, so cocaine fit the bill for the son, as the safe zone for setting up camp.
The lesson here is that our children copy what we do, so we as parents must be very careful. We as children must also be VERY careful if our parents are self abusive and self destructive. The rules are simple……we’ll be like our parents and our kids will become like us. This can become a blessing or a curse depending on who’s involved and therefore if negative influences are in play, we must be vigilant not to fall prey to the mimicking program inside our own brains. What that means is…..if your parents are positive role models, great! But if they’re not, you got some work to do, so you don’t end up self sabotaging yourself into one crisis after another.
