The External Focus Trap

The medication, the guru, the coach, the specialist, the trainer, the surgery, the tattoo, the new guy, the new girl, the affair, the car, the clothes, the cigarette, the joint, the new movie, the TV show, the job, the raise, the boss, she did it, he did it, the weather, my alarm didn’t go off, the cab was late, the pill, the potion, the powder, the government, the school, the degree, the raise, the reno, the newest cell phone, the surgery, the steroids, the vacation, the coffee, the boob job, the priest, God, Allah………….I’ll finally be happy somewhere down the road (in an imaginary future) when someone else or something else does it for me. If I don’t get what I want, it’s because someone else or something else has failed me. You know what? That’s what stops most people from moving forward one inch in their own life and it’s called the external focus trap. Always looking out the window instead of looking in the mirror.

It’s how the most sensitive and fragile side of ourselves never wants to look internally because the criticism of self may be too hard to take. That’s weak and being weak gets you no where in life. Being brave gets you places and being brave isn’t about getting inside the Octagon to fight, your new skull tattoo or smoking a joint/getting drunk and telling your friend that you don’t give a fuck about anything. That’s pretend tough, the show, the facade, the disguise, the mimicking of fake tough people on a movie screen. Being strong means being brave enough to look at yourself and know that you’re the ONLY ONE holding yourself back because you’re thinking someone or something else is going to solve all your problems for you. It’s easier to blame others. That’s weak and lazy. It’s a great way to stay stuck and justify your non evolution. I’m like this because something or someone external to me failed me. Get over that nonsense imprinted into you, focus INTERNALLY and move away from such mental slavery.

A Funeral for Failure

This brought me to tears. What a powerful lesson!
