I met a lady recently who told me she knew how to eat for weight loss because she had read every diet book there was…..but there was something very wrong. This nice lady had never been at a good weight, ever in her life. Information about diet or nutrition wasn’t the issue here because she knew what to eat but could never eat the healthy foods to make her lose weight and reverse disease. Problem solving, logic and honesty with “self” were the first things racing through my mind. (and I never discuss my findings with people unless they’re my clients……..so I said nothing)
This lady needed to be honest with herself and come to grips with the idea that there’s more to weight loss than knowing what to eat. Weight loss is complex and in most cases people have been taught to avoid weight loss because weight loss is synonymous with pleasure. In their youth someone has told them that taking pleasure in themselves may be a vain or shallow pursuit worthy of shame, ridicule from others and guilt. You can test yourself very easily about your childhood programming, regarding this issue but you need to know how to be honest with yourself as well.
Find someone being vain in a magazine and make sure it’s someone really taking pride in themselves and their accomplishments. How do you feel? If you don’t like them because they take pride in themselves, how do you think you’ll react when you start taking pride in yourself? That’s right! You won’t like yourself and that makes it really easy to stay overweight. It’s an invisble program from childhood, which keeps you avoiding your best life.
For example, a friend of mine was reading a magazine once and David Beckham was in nothing but his underwear, pretty well showing the world what he was made of. Not only is David Beckham wealthy and successful but he’s also well built. He enjoys life to the fullest. My friend (who’s about 10 years older than me) was with her daughter and said out loud, “what a show off, he thinks he’s all that“. Unfortunately in the mind of the child she learned to not want to take that much pride in herself ever unless she wanted to come under that sort of ridicule from her mother. (a person the daughter loved more than anyone in the world). It’s these small phrases that can literally manufacture adults who don’t want to be their best. One institution in our society is famous for such phrases that teach people to believe there’s a benefit to pain (and sacrifice) and shame in taking pride in anything having to do with improving yourself. The evidence is clear as well in regards to exposure to this institution. The greater the exposure, the greater the dysfunction. (as the body is literally torn apart interally because pain is taught as being “good” and pleasure is taught as being “bad”)
