In order to understand self sabotage as a inhibitor of your dreams, you need to think GROUP SIZE. When you’re a master saboteur…….size matters. Given humans are conformity loving pack animals by design, they’ll always be attracted to the larger group.. as the primary driver of their behavior. In our ancient past, being with the bigger group equated to survival, superior mate selection, safety, security and a longer more peaceful existence. As a species, we’ve been around so long that loving and pursuing the bigger group is hard wired into our DNA. But there’s one big problem. Success is a very small group and that means we’re naturally afraid of. Less people are successful, which in turn triggers our genetic need to “not engage” and to avoid being successful ourselves. Small groups are never safer than the larger herd……or are they? Is our genetics getting in the way of our best life?
Being successful and in good shape…..is even a smaller group. Being successful, in good shape and moral is even a smaller group. So the smaller the group, the more we’re hard wired to run the other way. The larger the group, the more comfortable we feel within in it and the less likely we are too leave, even if that group is unsuccessful, out of shape, addicted, immoral, unethical, futile, depressing etc etc. This is the sort of genetic hard wiring that holds us back from getting exactly what we want in life…simply because the group that’s not getting what it wants in life is bigger. The key to making a break toward your best life is a) understand that you’ll always feel a fear going for your best life because by being a success, you’re going to be in a smaller herd and b) embrace that fear, know it’s coming, bypass it and go for your best life anyway.
