I know one of the most knowledgeable athletic coaches in Canada but he smokes dope, he’s overweight and his two front teeth are yellow from him smoking so much weed. He lives in Toronto and struggles greatly to make ends meet. Classic self sabotage is always about taking one step forward and one step back……because when you do that all day, nothing ever changes. By never changing, we never offend the herd of mediocrity who gave up on their dreams long ago. This sort of behavior isn’t logical but it’s tied to our genetic need to find safety and security in the herd. Being inside the herd makes us feel good. Being different than the herd makes us feel nervous. This is set into our genes.
Being overweight and unhealthy helps this guy “blend” in with the herd, which is primarily overweight and unhealthy. If he morphed into his full potential, he would be in shape, not addicted and healthy………which of course would make him tower above his peers and would make him a target of their judgment, which he’s not yet ready to do in his life. So he struggles on every front, even financially, thinking he’s simply a “working man’s personal trainer – a hero to the people” but in reality he’s simply too afraid to display what he’s fully capable of because he’s worried what all the under achievers would think of him, if he scaled the mountain of life success. And this is only one problem about living in a world where the systems in place promote under achievement, playing small and only striving to be average…….because it destroys the potentially in everyone else at the same time. The key to overcoming this self sabotage cycle is to recognize that it will FEEL TERRIFYING being your absolute best in this culture (because most everyone else isn’t) but you feel that fear and you keep rising anyway.
